Employees and potential employees of AMSANT should read AMSANT'S Administration Manual Information for overseas trained doctors For a medical practitioner to work as a doctor in the Northern Territory, - he or she must be professionally registered with the NT Medical Board.

Professional Registration If a doctor is registered by a Medical Board in another state in Australia; they may be registered by the NT Medical Board if they are of good standing, the job is similar and the conditions applying in other states can be met. If a doctor is not registered in another state of Australia, or if the conditions of their registration are dependent on location, they must apply for registration under the Health Act of the NT. . Conditional registration may be granted by the NT Medical Board, to overseas trained doctors who have not completed the Australian Medical Council process. (either permanent or temporary residents) - for positions of “unmet need”. The Board determines a “position of unmet need” when the position has not been filled by an Australian graduate.

Overseas graduates who have worked in general practice in Australia or in countries that have a similar medical system such as U.K., Canada, South. Africa seem to have more chance of being conditionally registered for GP positions in the NT. The NT Five Year Overseas Trained Doctor Scheme is different from scheme in other states, in that applicants have to be seriously considered for a GP position before they can apply. However as an alternative pathway to full registration and a provider number not dependent on location, it is attractive to doctors who have worked or trained in general practice overseas. It also enables them to work towards a postgraduate qualification as they work in remote Australia. For information.

Provider numbers are specific to both the GP and the position.
